About
Why opportunity is unequally distributed, and what could change it.
Truth Matters is an independent South African publication. We investigate and explain the systems that decide who gets access to housing, wealth, capital, business, good governance, infrastructure, education, and technology, and who does not.
Our purpose is not to tell you what to think. It is to give you enough verifiable evidence to think for yourself. Where we argue a case, in a column or an opinion piece, we argue it honestly, and we put the strongest objection to our own view in plain sight.
What we stand for
Credibility is the only asset we cannot buy back once it is spent. Every piece we publish is built on evidence and cites its sources. We present opposing views where they exist. We separate fact from inference from opinion. We avoid sensationalism and clickbait. We write in plain English. And when the evidence is mixed or the data is thin, we say so rather than pretend otherwise.
We prioritise accuracy over speed, always. We are slower than the news cycle on purpose.
Our series
Our work is organised into flagship series, each a sustained line of inquiry rather than a category: The Access Economy, Priced Out, Municipal Watch, Business Builders, South Africa Explained, AI & Society, Data Behind the Headlines, and Voices.
Corrections
We correct mistakes visibly, with a date and a plain description of what changed. Transparency about our own errors is not a weakness in what we do. It is the point of it.
